This article is an excellent lead-in to the value of CANRISK. Given the disease prevalence in these populations, I would interested in knowing if any pharmacists on the forum make a point of discussing this with their patients who are specifically in these high risk populations.

Hi Janet,

I thought I would share with you another interesting piece of news I read today. A State representative in Georgia recently proposed a Bill (House Bill 879) requiring personnel at all schools be educated about diabetes, for situations such as the one in Nova Scotia.

The legislation would require state departments to develop guidelines, including recognizing and treating hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia; understanding the appropriate actions to take when blood glucose levels are out of the target ranges; and understanding physician instructions.

The personnel would also be required to administer tests to check blood glucose levels and recognize situations that require emergency assistance.

Additionally, the bill would allow diabetic students to check and regulate their own blood glucose levels with permission from a parent.

It seems as though provincial or municipal legislation could achieve the same goals here in Canada. (original article here and the full legislation here)

This has been an area of concern and interest of mine for some time. I did a small survey of teachers in our province that included rural and urban sites. What I found was that there were no guidelines from the Department of Education. Each school and in fact each division handled it on their own. It was more than likely up to the parent to educate the staff. One comment from a principal indicated the following: "Our expectations are that we need to care for each student totally with little or no training and liability is really not spoken about. "In Loco Parentis" is a term often used.It means that we are to provide for every student as if we were their parent. "
Are these realistic expectations for staff who have had no training ? Should it be part of their everyday "duties?" I would be interested in hearing others comments and experiences.
